I’ve worked on several SNES systems that will boot the diagnostic cart to the test selection screen, but then crash as soon as any test is selected.
There’s probably a more correct description of what’s happening – but I just call this symptom “crash on boot”
Sometimes, consoles with this symptom will also play sound, but have no image, for other games. Super Mario World for example shows the Nintendo logo and plays the theme song over a black screen after that.
The only other time this symptom seems to present (crashing after selecting a diagnostic test) is when testing an SHVC model and forgetting to plug in a sound card. It’s worth trying a known good sound card when you encounter this behavior, but 99% of the time, it’s a dead CPU.
